Student Employment
Are you interested in working while you are in college? Do you need assistance with finding a job that will compliment your studies? There are many opportunities available to students looking for work while attending school. We want to assist you in locating the work opportunity that best supports your vocational and educational goals. You are also encouraged to visit the Career and Transfer Center to discover the numerous resources available. The following are five employment opportunities that you may consider:
Federal Work Study (FWS)
The Federal Work Study program provides funds to students with a financial need. Funds are earned through part-time employment. Hopkinsville Community College offers a significant number of FWS opportunities. Under the FWS program, you can earn money for your education by working part-time while you are enrolled in school at least half-time (6 credit hours) and have documented unmet need. Generally FWS positions are on-campus, but a limited number of opportunities are available off-campus. You will also need to make sure you have completed a financial aid FAFSA application for the current Financial Aid Award Year and have a valid FAFSA on file.
Your total FWS award depends on:
- when you apply
- your level of financial need
- your school's funding level
- a supervisor's willingness to hire you
Once it has been determined that you are eligible for Federal Work Study, you are required to submit an online application for student employment and a resume. You may be contacted as job opportunities are available. If selected, you will be required to complete an employment background check.
VA Work Study
Opportunities are also available for VA work study through HCC Veterans Services. Additional VA work study information is available at the VA GI Bill® website.
GI Bill® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). More information about education benefits offered by VA is available at the official U.S. government Web site at http://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill.
On-Campus Student Worker Positions (Non-Federal Work Study)
Hopkinsville Community College offers a limited number of on-campus student worker positions (non-Federal Work Study). The positions are funded from HCC institutional funds, and opportunities are primarily available providing customer service to other students in the areas of the information desk, call center, and other departments within in student services. You are encouraged to visit the Career and Transfer Center for additional information. You will be required to submit an online application for student employment and a resume. You may be contacted as job opportunities are available. If selected, you will be required to complete an employment background check.
Ready to Work (RTW) Program
If you are a student or potential student of Hopkinsville Community College and you receive Kentucky Transitional Assistance Program (KTAP) benefits, you may be eligible to participate in the Ready to Work (RTW) program. There are many RTW students who are currently working in various jobs on and off campus.
The Ready to Work program is a partnership between the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) and the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services. The program is designed to move individuals from welfare to the workplace. Ready to Work assists students who are recipients of KTAP.
The Ready to Work program provides career assessment, skills attainment, life skills, plus a wide array of counseling, advising and mentoring services. Workshops are conducted throughout the year which are geared toward the needs of those students who are enrolled in the program. The workshops most requested are: employability skills, budgeting, parenting, and study skills.
In addition, Federal Work Study is an important component of the Ready to Work program. In order for a Ready to Work student to qualify for Federal Work Study, he/she must complete new employee paperwork that includes a background check. Ready to Work students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 to participate in Federal Work Study. Students are placed in appropriate work sites on or off campus. After a work placement site is selected, the student must complete a job application/interview with potential employer. Work-study students are paid by the Ready to Work program. There is no cost to the participating employer.

Work & Learn Program
Do you wish to earn your general education diploma (GED) or need some remediation before you begin working toward a college degree? Do you desire to get paid while completing your education?
The Work & Learn program - an expansion of the Ready to Work program - serves adult education/remediation students who are working toward obtaining a diploma or needing to brush up on their academics before entering into postsecondary education. Student participants are placed in temporary jobs that enable them to gain employability skills and retention skills, while allowing time to study for the GED. Participants receive advising, mentoring and job readiness skills while participating in the Work & Learn program.
The Work & Learn case manager works in collaboration with the Kentucky Cabinet for Families and Children to assure that KTAP recipients are meeting the required criteria needed to receive governmental benefits. The Work & Learn case manager monitors participants' progress toward obtaining the GED, class attendance, and the work requirement. Once participants earn the GED, they will receive $250.00 as a graduation bonus from the Kentucky Cabinet for Families and Children. Additionally, the Work & Learn case manager continues to assist GED graduates in a smooth transition to postsecondary education.
