Mr. Sam B. Miles Recognized By HCC, Community College System as Benefactor of the Year

The late Sam B. Miles was recently recognized for his generous philanthropic support to Hopkinsville Community College (HCC) during the 12th annual Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) Presidents Gala and Benefactors Awards Dinner that was held Saturday, November 19 at 7 p.m. in the Bluegrass Ballroom of The Lexington Center, downtown Lexington.

Mr. Miles chose to plan his estate to include a bequest to Hopkinsville Community College, and the college has established a textbook scholarship endowment in Mr. Miles name, using his $100,000 gift to perpetuate his love for reading and students.

Mr. Miles, who passed away in November of 2010, was a native of Christian County. He was a WWII veteran having served in England with the Eighth Army Air Force. He was the owner of Barnes Motor Company until 1976 and a Past President of the Kentucky Automobile Dealers Association. He was also a member of the Board of Directors at the former First City Bank amp; Trust Company, which is now BBamp;T, for over 30 years. Mr. Miles was a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board of Directors for over 60 years and a member of the Board of Directors at Jennie Stuart Medical Center from 1969 until 1982. He was a member of the Christian County Historical Society and a member of the Board of Directors at the Pennyroyal Area Museum. He was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder for over 60 years.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Naurine Ward Miles, and his second wife, Goldie Dickerson Miles.

Beverly and Don Atwood accepted by benefactor award on behalf of the Miles Estate. More than 600 state and local dignitaries from across the Commonwealth also attended the event.
