HCC Named Military Friendly School

Hopkinsville Community College has been named as a Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs for the second consecutive year. The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace Americas veterans as students.

Criteria for making the Military Friendly Schools list included efforts to recruit and retain military and veteran students, results in recruiting military and veteran students and academic accreditations. The list was compiled through exhaustive research starting last April during which G.I. Jobs polled more than 7,000 schools nationwide.

This list is especially important now because the Post-9/11 GI Bill^® has given veterans virtually unlimited financial means to go to school, said Rich McCormack, G.I. Jobs publisher. Veterans can now enroll in any school, provided theyre academically qualified. So schools are clamoring for them like never before. Veterans need a trusted friend to help them decide where to get educated. The Military Friendly Schools list is that trusted friend.

Hopkinsville Community College is unique in the fact that it has an extended campus housed on the Fort Campbell Army Base. HCC serves active duty military, family members, veterans and Department of Defense employees. At the Fort Campbell Campus, we recognize the entire military familys sacrifice and cater to them as a whole, said Marc Barker, campus director - HCC Fort Campbell.

HCC will be launching a Veterans Program and opening a resource facility at the Fort Campbell Campus this fall to further assist the military student. Cathy Alston joined HCC as the new coordinator of veterans affairs in July. Her focus will be to support the nearly 1,200 military students at HCC, guide them through transition and provide career service. Ms. Alston will hold office hours at both Hopkinsville and Fort Campbell campuses.
