HCC Announces Award Winners For 44th Round Table Edition
Today at a ceremony attended by a large crowd of Hopkinsville area residents, HCC students, faculty, and staff, Hopkinsville Community College celebrated the unveiling of its 44th Annual Round Table Magazine. Bernd Sauermann, HCC associate professor/discipline coordinator of the division of fine arts and humanities and 2010 Round Table coordinator, dedicated this years edition to HCC English Professor Brett Ralph for his past commitment to the magazine. Ralph has been the faculty sponsor for many past Round Table editions, but is currently on sabbatical.
Attendees of todays ceremony heard readings from various authors and were the first to view the annual magazine representing the collection of creative works submitted by residents in the HCC service area. Awards were also presented to winners in a number of categories.
This years award winners were:
The Roger Selvidge Memorial Art Awards recognize outstanding work by area visual artists. They are named after the late Roger Selvidge, an area artist, photographer, author, retired high school teacher, and champion of the arts.

The Harbinger Awards recognize outstanding work by area elementary and middle school students, in hopes that it represents a harbinger of creative endeavors to come.
The Harbinger Award for Poetry (Elementary School Division):
o First Prize: Jaden Ogburn for "Money"
o Second Prize: Nayeli Meza for "Candy"
o Third Prize: Taylor Greenfield for "Do Not Throw Things"
The Harbinger Award for Prose (Elementary School Division):
o First Prize: Jaden Ogburn for "Cheese Quest"
o Second Prize: Allie Greenfield for "The Little Walk"
The Nora Dunbar Awards recognize outstanding work (poetry) by area high school students and are named for retired Christian County English instructor Nora Dunbar.
o First Prize: Terri Hartsoe for "Once Upon a Time"
o Second Prize: Austin Norrid for "The Thistle"

o Third Prize: Jennifer Soladay for "The Seventh Star"
o Honorable Mention: Thomas Broadbent for "Morgan's Sickle Cell Universal"
o Honorable Mention: Marvin Shackelford for "Gunpowder"
o Honorable Mention: Michael O'Brien for "Jack of All Trades"
The Night Rider Award for Fiction:
o Marvin Shackelford for "Why It's Legal to Drink and Drive in Pulaski, Tennessee"
The Night Rider Award for Creative Non-Fiction
o Ed McClanahan for "The Imp of Writing"
The Edgar Cayce Awards recognize outstanding achievement in the prose poem, that most surreal and elusive form, and are named for Christian County clairvoyant Edgar Cayce, who saw this world unlike anyone else.
o First Prize: James Maroney for "This is Not a Suicide Note"
o Second Prize: James Maroney for "This Last Early-Blue Morning"
The Carl Suddeath Awards recognize outstanding work by Hopkinsville Community College faculty and staff members. They are named for retired HCC English professor and longtime Round Table contributor Carl Suddeath.
The Carl Suddeath Fiction Award:
o Julia Laffoon-Jackson for "Mr. Barry's Ghost"
The Carl Suddeath Poetry Award :
o Brian Coatney for his poem Night Watch
The Frances G. Thomas Awards recognize outstanding poetry and prose by Hopkinsville Community College students. They are named for retired HCC English professor and Round Table founder Frances G. Thomas.
o First Prize, Poetry: John Gruccio for "There Is No Body"
o Second Prize, Poetry: Laura Sullivan for "Ebony-Draped Maiden"
o Third Prize, Poetry: Laura Sullivan for "Sprite"
For the 44th edition of the Round Table, the editorial staff received submissions from over 100 different area authors and visual artists consisting of several hundred pages of poetry and prose, as well as over 50 works of visual art.
