HCC ANNOUNCES 2011 SPIRIT CUP AWARD WINNER

The Spirit Cup Outstanding Hopkinsville Community College Graduate Award, given by the Alpha Delta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, is presented annually at HCCs Commencement. During the Colleges 45th commencement held Friday, May 6, at the James E. Bruce Convention Center, Carolina Rojas Ramirez was named the 2010-11 Spirit Cup honoree. She was among more than 500 HCC graduates in the Class of 2011.

Miss Ramirez, an Oak Grove resident, graduated Friday evening with associate in science and associate in art degrees. For the past year, Carolina served as the president of the HCC Science Club. She has also been employed as a student worker on campus where she assisted in the biology laboratory.

Ramirezs faculty nominator praised her academic performance as well as her attitude. Carolina not only performs well on exams but she also has a natural curiosity about science that goes further than just getting a good grade in the course. She embodies the spirit of HCC through her attitude toward learning, her leadership skills, and her helpfulness to others. I have no doubt that she will become an expert in her future field of study, stated the award nominator.

This summer Carolina will be relocating to Virginia with her family where she plans to attend The College of William amp; Mary.

Spirit Award background: The local HCC chapter of the international honor society maintains a mission to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students. Presentation of the Spirit award is a tradition that began at Bethel College and has continued at Hopkinsville Community College since 1967. The purpose of the award is to recognize the most outstanding graduate of HCC. Faculty and staff nominate students and a committee of faculty and staff chooses the recipient.

To be eligible for the Spirit Cup, the student must meet exacting criteria including, be graduating with an associate degree, be actively involved in the college, have at least a 3.0 GPA, have demonstrated leadership ability, and be positive and enthusiastic about HCC.
