Fore The Students: 20th Annual Mike Foster Scholarship Golf Scramble Set For October 1

The Mike Foster Golf Scramble, which benefits the Hopkinsville Community College Foundation and Hopkinsville Community College (HCC) student scholarships, is set for Friday, October 1 with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. at Western Hills Municipal Golf Course.

Between 25 and 30 teams compete in the scramble each year. The format of the scramble will be 4 persons per team. The entry fee is $125 each or $500 per team, which includes green fees, a premium gift for each golfer, a cart, breakfast and lunch. There will be three flights: red, white, and blue. Prizes include a chance to win a $10,000 hole-in-one, electronics, travel items and much more.

Earlier this year, the scramble was named in honor of Christian County Attorney Mike Foster to recognize his continual 20 years of dedication to the fundraising event as well as service to the HCC Foundation. What is remarkable about Mike is that he has maintained the connection to where his educational career began, and has faithfully supported his community college and his home throughout his numerous successes, noted Yvette Eastham, executive director of the HCC Foundation.

The scramble was one of the regions first charity golf scrambles. It began in 1990, humbly, as an attempt to raise monies to assist local HCC students. With a history of providing scholarships to local college students, and an opportunity for friends and colleagues to enjoy a golf outing the first Friday each October, the scramble has grown to be a traditional gathering for duffers and a chance to provide further direct support to college students.

Over $30,000 in support has been distributed in the past three years alone. There is no one who has championed the cause of students attending Hopkinsville Community College more than Mike Foster, stated Jo Glover, president of the HCC Foundation board. Mike was in the first graduating class of HCC and he understands, perhaps better than anyone, the role of the college in the communitys past and its impact for the future, Glover continued.

The net proceeds of the annual golf scramble go directly to the Foundations Textbook Scholarship Program, which now benefits dozens of students each semester. Most recently, the program was endowed for $100,000 with $50,000 in gifts from local community members gathered by board member Terry Hamby and a $50,000 match from the KCTCS Endowment Trust, a program specifically targeted to support the community college system, and similar to the university based bucks for brains effort. Mike has said that HCC provides the foundation for a progressive community, and has dramatically improved the quality of life in Christian and surrounding counties. We would add that we honor the progressive and visionary work of Mike Foster, Don Atwood, Hill Ferguson, Wynn Radford and others who have faithfully supported this college and challenged us to be at the forefront of partnering for transformation of our region, said HCC President Dr. Jim Selbe.

There are several ways to demonstrate support through the Mike Foster Golf Scramble. Interested persons can form a golf team, sponsor a hole on the golf course or give a general donation to the textbook scholarship fund.Registration andsponsorship forms can be downloaded online.
