Hopkinsville Community College is beginning our first Medical Assisting program courses. This is an 11-month program of study arranged in a cohort style, meaning you have courses with the same group of students the entire time that you are pursuing your Medical Assisting credential.

A Medical Assistant is an integral member of the health care delivery team, qualified by education and experience to work in the administrative office, the examining room and the physician’s laboratory. Individuals in this unique position will be involved in many of the following skills: General health care professional practices, Administrative duties, Clinical preparation for patient examinations, procedures and treatment, record medical histories, take vital signs, chart patient information, administer medications and injections, provide patient instruction and education, perform venipunctures, collect and prepare other specimens, perform electrocardiograms (ECG), sterilize instruments, and perform basic laboratory tests.

The Medical Assistant is a vital liaison between the doctor and patient, and plays an important role in diagnosis and treatment. The many different roles assumed in this profession assure a fast moving and challenging career.

Program Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the Medical Assisting program, the below requirements must be met:

  • CPR Certification
  • ENG 101 - 3 credits
  • PSY 110 - 3 credits
  • Heritage/Humanities Course - 3 credits
  • MAT 110 or Higher - 3 credits2017
  • BIO 137 - 4 credits
  • BIO 139 - 4 credits
  • or BIO 135 - 4 credits
  • AHS 115 or CLA 131 - 3 credits
  • Digital Literacy - 3 credits

Total General Education Hours = 22-26 credits                                                             

Mandatory Pre-Admission Conference

Attendance at only one session is required. Pre-registration is not needed.
